Developing Your Business Fundamentals

Knowledge –

The saying ‘knowledge is power isn’t actually true. It’s only true IF you use it.

Skills –

These don’t drive success, but they contribute to what we want. There is often a gap between the skills you have and those that your business needs, so sometimes you can outsource this.

Resources –

You may be a 10 out of 10 when it comes to being able to do a role in your business, but the reality is with the staff we hire, you’d be lucky if you get a seven or an eight. The reality is no one will care more about the business than you. Chances are most people you interview with be a 5 or a 6. So you need to attract quality candidates to find 7, 8s and 9s to work in your business.

Opportunity –

How do you identify the right opportunity? The challenge is understanding what opportunities are worth chasing, weighing up the risk/reward, and having the ability to say no when you need to. Often we don’t take the opportunities staring us in the face probably due to fear.

Decisions –

We make these in the business every day, and we must get good at making them intelligently and effectively.

Actions –

Without actions, nothing will get done, but we need to have the ability to prioritize and recognise which actions are more influential in getting our desired result.

Beliefs –

Why is this a factor in getting what we want? Many reasons typically stem from fear. For example “That job is too big/complex for me” Remember that every strength you have was once a weakness so beliefs can be changed.

Time –

As business owners, we are constantly challenged to use time effectively.

Support –

These are the systems and processes that we put in place, so we don’t make the same mistakes repeatedly.

The Business Development Process: Think BIG!

Building a Successful Business Relies heavily on 4 key factors:

  1. Knowing where you want to go & Why You Want To Go There.
    • This is important to set a target and have a compelling reason to drive you to take action.

  2. Setting Clearly Defined, Time-Based Goals for the Business
    • This is important so you know exactly what you want and when to accomplish it, which helps you plan your actions to achieve your goal.

  3. Having a detailed Plan of HOW you think you’re going to get there
    • This is important as it defines the actions and strategy of achieving your goal so you know how to move towards your goal.

  4. Taking Consistent Pre-Planned Actions every Day
    • This is important because to achieve your goal, you must take multiple actions, which helps ensure you maintain the momentum and drive towards your goals.

Companies that enjoy enduring success have a vision, a set of core values and a purpose that remain fixed while their business strategies and practices endlessly adapt to a changing world.

The dynamic of preserving the core of who you are, what you do and why you do it while stimulating progress is key to sustained growth in any business or organisation.

Truly great companies understand the difference between what should never change and what should be open for change, between what is genuinely sacred and what is not. This rare ability to manage continuity and change – requiring a consciously practised discipline – is closely linked to developing a vision with clearly defined goals.

These business goals are the foundation of every successful business; without them all in order, your business will eventually fail.
Imagine building a house with a poor foundation, eventually cracking and falling; it is the same with your business.

Here’s a description of each type of goal:

FOMRI

  • F: Financial goals are around key financial metrics like profitability that ensure your business is financially healthy, sustainable and grows. For example, increase profitably by 20% in the next 12 months.

  • O: Operational goals describe how you want your business to function, such as the processes and systems used. For example, introducing a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system.

  • M: Marketing and sales goals revolve around how you attract customers or grow your brand. For example, attract 50% more leads in 3 months by using a Facebook marketing campaign.

  • P:  Resources/People goals describe goals either for your employees or any other professionals you use, such as contractors and could include recruitment or development. For example, recruit sales representatives.

  • I: Innovation goals centre around the creation, development and implementation of a new product, process or service. For example, to start a new line of services in your business or adapt an existing one.

Creating Your Business Culture

An organisation’s culture defines the proper way to behave within the organization. This culture consists of shared beliefs and values established by the business leaders and then communicated and reinforced through various methods, ultimately shaping employee and customer perceptions, behaviours and understanding.

CULTURAL STRUCTURE

  • Core values
    • These beliefs, philosophies, and principles are essential to your business and drive it. The impact of the employee experience you deliver and the relationship you develop with your customers, partners, and shareholders.

  • Joint goals
    • These are common goals amongst the resources or groups of resources your company has that serve the company’s needs. This ensures that the efforts of resources are helping you realise these joint goals.

  • Common vision
    • Having a common vision provides a sense of purpose and direction for the resources in your business. This vision will help your resources define your short and long-term goals, and guide the decisions made along the way.

  • Core purpose
    • This is the reason the business exists. Purpose-driven companies make more money, have more engaged employees and loyal customers, and innovate even better.

  • Policies
    • Business policies are a set of rules defined by the owner or leadership of the company. Business policies are an essential tool to ensure that the business operates at maximum efficiency.
